Joseph Wilbur “Joe” Adcock (1927–1999) was a powerful right-handed hitting first baseman and outfielder who played 17 Major League seasons (1950–1966). He is best remembered as a key slugger for the Milwaukee Braves teams of the 1950s that won the World Series.
Adcock played for the Cincinnati Reds (1950–1952), Milwaukee Braves (1953–1962) – His longest and most successful tenure, Cleveland Indians (1963) and Los Angeles / California Angels (1964–1966). He was often overshadowed by his Hall of Fame teammates Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews, but together they formed one of the most feared home run trios of the era.
Adcock was renowned for his colossal power. On April 29, 1953, he became the first player ever to hit a home run into the distant center-field bleachers at the old Polo Grounds.
