Raymond Otis “Ray” Boone (1923–2004) was a professional baseball infielder who had a 13-season Major League career, playing primarily in the 1950s. While he was a talented player in his own right, he is perhaps most famous for being the patriarch of the first family to send three generations of players to the Major Leagues.
Boone played for several teams including the Cleveland Indians (1948–1953), Detroit Tigers (1953–1958) – The team where he achieved his greatest success, Chicago White Sox (1958–1959), Kansas City Athletics (1959), Milwaukee Braves (1959–1960) and the Boston Red Sox (1960).
He was a two-time American League All-Star (1954 and 1956), both while playing for the Tigers. He was a rookie member of the Cleveland Indians team that won the World Series. After being traded to Detroit in 1953, Boone found his stride playing third base. He finished 8th in the AL MVP voting that year and hit a career-high 26 home runs for the season.
Ray Boone is the foundation of one of baseball’s most successful and enduring families. His son, Bob Boone (Catcher, 1972–1990) – Four-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner, and 1980 World Series champion. His grandsons Bret Boone (Second Baseman, 1992–2005) – Three-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove winner and Aaron Boone (Infielder, 1997–2009) – One-time All-Star and manager of the New York Yankees.
