Bobby Bonilla’s baseball career spanned from 1986 to 2001, playing for several teams including the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and St. Louis Cardinals. He was a switch-hitter who played as a third baseman and outfielder.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bonilla was one of the top players in the MLB. He was a six-time All-Star, won three Silver Slugger Awards, and was a key part of a Pirates team that won three consecutive National League East Division titles from 1990 to 1992.
In 1992, Bonilla signed a five-year, $29 million contract with the New York Mets, which was a record for a single-season salary at the time. His time with the Mets was marked by a contentious relationship with the media, and his offensive production declined from his peak with the Pirates.
This deferred payment plan with the Mets is a notable part of Bonilla’s legacy and is famously known as “Bobby Bonilla Day.” Starting in 2011 and continuing until 2035, the Mets pay Bonilla an annual installment of approximately $1.19 million. This deal turned a $5.9 million obligation into a nearly $30 million total payout due to a negotiated 8% interest rate.
