Mark McGwire is one of the most recognizable and, at the same time, most controversial figures in modern baseball history. He was a dominant power hitter whose career was defined by record-setting home run totals and later, by his admission of using performance-enhancing drugs.

McGwire was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in 1984. He made an immediate impact, winning the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 1987 after hitting a rookie-record 49 home runs. Throughout his time with the Athletics, he was a key part of the “Bash Brothers” duo with Jose Canseco and helped the team win the 1989 World Series.

In 1998, after being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, McGwire captivated the nation in a dramatic chase for the single-season home run record. He and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs engaged in a friendly, season-long competition to break Roger Maris’s long-standing record of 61 home runs. The race revitalized baseball’s popularity following the 1994 strike. McGwire ultimately won the race, finishing the season with 70 home runs and becoming the first player to hit 70 in a single season.

McGwire’s legacy is irrevocably linked to the steroid era. While he denied using steroids for years, he admitted in 2010 to using them during his playing days, including his record-breaking 1998 season. This admission has cast a shadow over his accomplishments and has been a major reason why he has not been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
