Before Alomar became a Cleveland icon, he was a highly touted prospect in the San Diego Padres system. However, he was blocked by All-Star catcher Benito Santiago. In 1989, San Diego traded Alomar (along with Carlos Baerga) to Cleveland for power hitter Joe Carter. It remains one of the most successful trades in Cleveland history.
Alomar made an immediate impact, becoming one of the few players in history to sweep the major rookie honors including AL Rookie of the Year: A unanimous selection. Winning a Gold Glove Award He became just the third rookie catcher ever to win one (joining Johnny Bench and Carlton Fisk). He was also an All-Star Starter.
He is the son of Sandy Alomar Sr. and the brother of Hall of Fame second baseman Roberto Alomar. The brothers were teammates in Cleveland during the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
After retiring in 2007, he transitioned into coaching. He has been a fixture on the Cleveland coaching staff since 2010 (now the Guardians), serving as a first base coach, bench coach, and even interim manager.
