Selected in the 3rd round of the 1986 MLB Draft out of Florida High School (Tallahassee, FL) by the Texas Rangers, Dean William Palmer was one of the most explosive, high-volume power-hitting third basemen of the 1990s junk-wax era and beyond.
Famous for his light-tower power, compact right-handed swing, and soft hands at the hot corner, Palmer spent 14 seasons in the Major Leagues (1989–2003) across stints with the Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, and Atlanta Braves. Over 1,328 career games, he launched 275 home runs, drove in 839 runs, and won two Silver Slugger Awards.
Palmer anchored the hot corner during an era of historic offensive output, serving as a core power engine for the high-octane 1990s Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers lineups.
1992 Breakout Campaign: Claimed the everyday third base job in Texas and immediately delivered big power, hitting 26 home runs with 72 RBIs in 137 games.
1993 38-HR Barrage: Smashed a career-high 38 home runs and drove in 96 RBIs for the Rangers in 1993, establishing himself alongside Juan González and Ivan Rodriguez in Texas’ dangerous middle-of-the-order.
1996 Silver Slugger & AL West Title: Hit 38 home runs and drove in 107 RBIs while posting a career-best .523 slugging percentage, winning his first Silver Slugger Award and helping Texas capture its first AL West division title.
1998 All-Star & Royals Record: Bounced back from injury to launch 34 home runs and drive in 119 RBIs between Kansas City and Texas in 1998, earning his first AL All-Star selection.
1999 Silver Slugger in Detroit: Signed a major free-agent deal with the Tigers and delivered another 38-HR, 100-RBI season in 1999, earning his second Silver Slugger Award at third base.
