Selected in the 2nd round (39th overall pick) of the 1987 MLB Draft out of William Fremd High School (IL) by the New York Mets, Todd Randolph Hundley carried on a rich family legacy (son of former Cubs backstop Randy Hundley) while establishing himself as one of the single most prolific power-hitting catchers of the 1990s.
Hundley played 14 Major League seasons (1990–2003) across stints with the Mets, Dodgers, and Cubs. Known initially for his defense and throwing arm, the switch-hitting backstop unlocked massive power in the mid-90s, shattering historic single-season home run records behind the plate.
After establishing himself as New York’s primary backstop in the early 1990s, Hundley put together one of the most explosive offensive seasons ever recorded by a catcher.
Historic 1996 Campaign: Smashed 41 home runs and drove in 112 RBIs in 153 games, breaking Hall of Famer Roy Campanella’s 43-year-old MLB single-season record for home runs by a catcher (40).
Mets Franchise Record: His 41 home runs set the all-time single-season home run record for the New York Mets franchise (later tied by Carlos Beltrán and broken by Pete Alonso).
Back-to-Back All-Star Selections: Followed up his breakout with a dominant 1997 season, launching 30 home runs with 86 RBIs and an elite .394 OBP, earning his second consecutive NL All-Star nod.
