Robert “Bobby” Tolan was a talented, left-handed outfielder who played in Major League Baseball for 13 seasons, from 1965 to 1977 and again in 1979. He was known for his speed, ability to get on base, and his contributions to two of baseball’s most memorable teams of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Tolan began his career as a highly touted prospect with the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his debut in 1965 and was a reserve outfielder during the Cardinals’ successful runs. He was part of the 1967 World Series champion Cardinals team and also played on the 1968 National League champions, though they ultimately lost to the Detroit Tigers in a thrilling seven-game World Series.

Tolan’s career truly blossomed after he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds before the 1969 season. Given the opportunity to play regularly in center field, he became a key component of the burgeoning “Big Red Machine.”

In 1970, he continued his strong play, batting a career-high .316 with 16 home runs and 80 RBIs. Most notably, he led the National League with 57 stolen bases. That year, the Reds won the NL West and went on to the World Series, where they lost to the Baltimore Orioles.

His promising career was interrupted when he missed the entire 1971 season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon sustained playing basketball. However, he made a remarkable comeback in 1972, batting .283 with 42 steals and earning the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award and the Hutch Award.

After the 1973 season, Tolan’s production declined, and he was traded to the San Diego Padres. He played for the Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates, with a season in Japan for the Nankai Hawks in 1978, before a final stint with the Padres in 1979.

After his playing days, Tolan remained involved in baseball, serving as a coach in the major leagues and managing various minor league teams.

Bob Tolan has a recognized rookie card in the 1966 Topps baseball set, card #179, titled “Cardinals Rookies.” This is a multi-player rookie card, which was common for Topps in this era. It features Bob Tolan alongside Dennis Aust.
