Mike Scioscia is a prominent figure in Major League Baseball, having had a significant career as both a player and a manager.

Scioscia was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 1976 amateur draft. He spent his entire 13-season playing career as a catcher for the Dodgers (1980-1992). Known for his durability and defensive prowess, he became the Dodgers’ regular catcher for a decade. Scioscia won two World Series championships with the Dodgers (1981 and 1988). He was a two-time National League All-Star (1989, 1990).

After his Dodgers career, he signed with the San Diego Padres in 1993 but suffered a torn rotator cuff and never played a game for them. He attempted a comeback with the Texas Rangers in 1994 but retired before making it to the majors.

After retiring as a player, Scioscia remained in baseball, serving as a coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1997 and 1998, and managing their Triple-A affiliate, the Albuquerque Dukes, in 1999.

In 2000, he was hired as the manager of the Anaheim Angels (later the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim/Los Angeles Angels), a position he held for 19 seasons until 2018. His tenure with the Angels was marked by a period of unprecedented success for the franchise winning the American League Manager of the Year award twice (2002 and 2009). He guided the Angels to six division titles (2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014), including five in a six-year span.

Scioscia has also managed the United States national baseball team. He led Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Qualifiers in 2021, where they went 4-0 to secure a spot in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. He then led the team to a silver medal at the Olympics.
