Jeffrey James “Jeff” Reardon, nicknamed “the Terminator” for his intimidating presence and fastball, was a dominant relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for 16 seasons (1979-1994). He was one of the game’s premier closers in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Reardon signed a minor league contract with the Mets in 1977 and made his MLB debut in August 1979. He primarily worked as a middle reliever during his time with the Mets. Reardon was traded to the Montreal Expos in 1981. It was with the Expos that he truly established himself as a closer, leading the majors in saves in 1985 with 41, and earning the NL Rolaids Relief Man Award. He was also selected to the All-Star team twice (1985, 1986) during his tenure in Montreal.

Prior to the 1987 season, Reardon was traded to the Minnesota Twins. He was a key component of the Twins team that won the 1987 World Series, earning his only World Series championship ring as a player. He earned his third All-Star selection in 1988, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to have 40-save seasons in both the American and National Leagues.

After becoming a free agent, Reardon signed with the Boston Red Sox in late 1989. In 1991, he had another 40-save season and was named to his fourth and final All-Star team. Later in the 1992 season, Reardon was traded to the Atlanta Braves. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds (1993) and finished his playing career with the New York Yankees (1994).

Reardon was known for his consistent ability to close out games, registering 20 or more saves for 11 consecutive seasons from 1982 to 1992.
