John Franklin “Johnny” Sain was a prominent right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball, best known for his dominant years with the Boston Braves and his later success as a pitching coach. He’s famously half of the poetic duo “Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain,” a tribute to the heavy workload and success he shared with fellow Braves ace Warren Spahn. He was a three-time All-Star (1947, 1948, 1953).
After retiring as a player, Johnny Sain embarked on an incredibly successful and influential career as a pitching coach. He was known for his unorthodox but effective methods, often prioritizing rest for his pitchers. He coached for several teams, including the Kansas City Athletics, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, and Atlanta Braves.
Johnny Sain’s most widely recognized and collected rookie card is this 1948 Bowman #12.
