Carroll “Whitey” Walter Lockman was a left-handed hitting outfielder and first baseman who played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1945 to 1959. He is most famously associated with the New York Giants, for whom he played the majority of his career, and was a key component of their pennant-winning teams in the early 1950s. Lockman was a key member of the 1954 New York Giants World Series championship team, which swept the Cleveland Indians. He hit a crucial home run in Game 3 of that series. He was selected to the National League All-Star team in 1952.
After retiring as a player, Lockman remained involved in baseball for decades. He notably served as a manager for the Chicago Cubs (1972-1974), and also held various coaching and scouting positions for several organizations, including the Cubs, Montreal Expos, and New York Yankees.
Whitey Lockman’s most widely recognized and collected rookie card is this 1948 Bowman #30.
