George Henry “Snuffy” Stirnweiss was an American professional baseball player who primarily played second base, but also spent time at shortstop and third base. He is best known for his time with the New York Yankees during the World War II era. Stirnweiss spent the majority of his MLB career with the Yankees. He was a multi-sport athlete in college, excelling in both baseball and football at the University of North Carolina. In 1944, he had a remarkable season, leading the American League in several offensive categories, including runs (125), hits (205), triples (16), and stolen bases (55). He finished fourth in the AL MVP voting that year. Stirnweiss was a member of three World Series champion Yankees teams (1943, 1947, 1949). He played in all seven games of the 1947 World Series.

After retiring from playing in 1952, Stirnweiss managed in the minor leagues for a couple of seasons before leaving professional baseball to work in finance. Tragically, he died at the age of 39 in a train accident in 1958.

Given that George Stirnweiss debuted in 1943, his “rookie” card comes from the significant post-World War II baseball card sets. His most recognized and widely collected rookie card is this 1948 Bowman #35.
