Martin “Marty” Whiteford Marion, also known by the nicknames “Mr. Shortstop” and “The Octopus” due to his unusually long arms and exceptional defensive range, was a highly celebrated shortstop. He was a cornerstone of the dominant St. Louis Cardinals teams of that era and later went on to a career in managing. Marion was a key member of the Cardinals’ dynasty in the 1940s, winning three World Series championships (1942, 1944, 1946). He was selected to the All-Star team eight consecutive times.
