Robert “Bobby” Brown Thomson, often known as “The Staten Island Scot,” was a professional baseball player forever etched in sports history for one iconic swing of the bat. While that singular moment defined his public persona, Thomson had a very respectable and productive Major League Baseball career as an outfielder and third baseman. He was a three-time All-Star (1948, 1949, 1952).
The “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” in 1951 is the moment that made Bobby Thomson a legend. On October 3, 1951, in the decisive third game of the National League pennant playoff series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, Thomson hit a dramatic walk-off, three-run home run off Ralph Branca in the bottom of the ninth inning. This improbable blast gave the Giants the pennant and is considered one of the greatest and most dramatic moments in baseball history.
Bobby Thomson’s most widely accepted rookie card is this 1948 Bowman #47.
