Don Zimmer has been involved in the game for an astonishing 65 years across eight decades. Known by the nickname “Popeye,” he was a recognizable and beloved figure in dugouts across Major League Baseball, with a career that spanned playing, managing, and coaching.

Zimmer’s playing career as an infielder (primarily shortstop, second base, and third base) lasted 12 seasons in the majors (1954-1965). He played for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, and Washington Senators. He was part of two World Series champion Dodgers teams in 1955 (Brooklyn) and 1959 (Los Angeles) and was a two-time All-Star in 1961.

It was in the dugout where Don Zimmer truly made his mark and became a household name. After a brief stint as a player-manager in the minors, he transitioned into coaching and eventually managing in the majors for many years.

Beyond managing, Zimmer served as a coach for numerous organizations, including the Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, and perhaps most famously, a long and successful tenure as the bench coach for the New York Yankees under Joe Torre from 1996 to 2003. During this period, he was an integral part of four Yankees World Series championship teams (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000), often seen as Torre’s right-hand man and a fiery presence in the dugout. After his time with the Yankees, he continued his lengthy career as a senior advisor for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays/Rays from 2004 until his death.
