Sandy Koufax’s baseball career is one of the most remarkable and compelling stories in the sport’s history. Despite a relatively short career, his dominance during his peak was unmatched, leading to his status as arguably the greatest left-handed pitcher of all time. While he struggled at first to find his groove, what followed was an unprecedented run of dominance that cemented his legend. From 1962 to 1966, Koufax was, quite simply, the best pitcher in baseball, perhaps ever. Koufax won three Cy Young Awards (1963, 1965, 1966) – the first pitcher to win three, and the only one to do so when only one award was given for both leagues. All three were unanimous. He was the National League MVP (1963), has 2 World Series MVP Awards (1963, 1965), 3 Pitching Triple Crowns (1963, 1965, 1966) – leading the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts in those seasons. Sandy Koufax led the Dodgers to three World Series titles (1959, 1963, 1965) during his career. His World Series ERA was an incredible 0.95 over 57 innings pitched.
Tragically, Koufax’s brilliant career was cut short by severe arthritis and bone spurs in his left elbow. The pain became unbearable, and despite being at the absolute peak of his powers, he made the difficult decision to retire at the incredibly young age of 30 after the 1966 season. His final season, 1966, was arguably his best, with a 27-9 record and a 1.73 ERA. Despite playing only 12 seasons, Sandy Koufax’s impact was profound. His career record was 165-87 with a 2.76 ERA and 2,396 strikeouts in 2,324.1 innings. He was the youngest player ever elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 at age 36. “The Left Arm of God” remains a timeless symbol of pitching excellence, a testament to what a pitcher can achieve in a short, explosive period of pure dominance.
