Harry Agganis, nicknamed “The Golden Greek,” had a tragically brief but highly notable professional baseball career that was cut short by his untimely death. His legacy is tied to his exceptional two-sport athletic talent and his decision to play for his hometown team.
Agganis played for the Boston Red Sox (1954–1955). He was an All-American college football quarterback at Boston University and was the first-round draft pick (12th overall) of the Cleveland Browns in the 1952 NFL Draft. However, he turned down the professional football offer to sign a “bonus baby” contract with the Boston Red Sox so he could stay near his family in Massachusetts.
His major league career spanned only one full season and the start of a second before he died suddenly on June 27, 1955, from a pulmonary embolism (blood clot) at the age of 26, following a hospitalization for pneumonia.
Despite his very short professional career, Harry Agganis remains a legendary figure in Boston sports history due to his spectacular college career (inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame) and the great promise that was tragically cut short.
