Frederick Wayne “Rick” Honeycutt is a former Major League Baseball pitcher whose career spanned an impressive 21 seasons (1977-1997) across six different teams. Known for his versatility as both a starting pitcher and a successful reliever, Honeycutt later became one of the most respected pitching coaches in the game.
Honeycutt made his MLB debut with the Seattle Mariners in 1977. He quickly established himself as a reliable left-handed starter. His best season with the Mariners came in 1980, where he earned his first All-Star selection.
Honeycutt continued to be a productive starter with the Texas Rangers. In 1983, he had a career-best year, winning 14 games and leading the American League with a superb 2.42 ERA, earning his second All-Star nod. Mid-season in 1983, Honeycutt was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he continued to pitch effectively as both a starter and reliever. Honeycutt joined the Oakland Athletics in 1987, a move that would see him transition primarily into a relief role under manager Tony La Russa. He was a key part of the Athletics teams that made three consecutive World Series appearances (1988, 1989, 1990).
Honeycutt earned his sole World Series championship as a player in 1989 when the A’s swept the San Francisco Giants in the “Battle of the Bay” Series.
Honeycutt continued to pitch well into his 40s, showcasing remarkable longevity. He had brief stints with the Texas Rangers (second stint), Oakland Athletics (third stint), New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals, where he finished his playing career in 1997 at the age of 43.
After retiring as a player, Rick Honeycutt embarked on a highly successful and respected coaching career, primarily as a pitching coach. Due to a back injury, Honeycutt stepped down from his pitching coach role after the 2019 season, transitioning into a role as a special assistant to the Dodgers.
