Willie Lee Jones, nicknamed “Puddin’ Head,” was a solid, power-hitting third baseman who played most of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies and was an important part of their 1950 “Whiz Kids” pennant-winning team.
Jones played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1947–1955), Cleveland Indians (1956–1958), Cincinnati Redlegs (1959), and an independent stint with the Milwaukee Braves (1959–1961). The nickname “Puddin’ Head” was reportedly given to him by a minor league manager who found him to be a sweet, good-natured player, though the meaning is often debated.
Jones was the starting third baseman for the 1950 Phillies team that surprised everyone by winning the National League pennant. He hit a crucial triple in the final game of the season against the Brooklyn Dodgers that helped seal the title.
Jones had a strong peak with the Phillies, but his production declined after 1953. He was traded to the Indians in 1956, marking the beginning of his journeyman phase as he finished his career playing for several other clubs.
