Elwin Charles “Preacher” Roe was a highly effective left-handed starting pitcher, best known as a key member of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ “Boys of Summer” teams of the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was celebrated for his control, guile, and his self-admitted use of the illegal spitball.

Roe played for the Brooklyn Dodgers 1948–1954. He formed a core part of the dominant Dodgers pitching staff, helping them win three National League pennants. Pittsburgh Pirates 1944–1947 and St. Louis Cardinals 1938 Brief debut before spending several years in the minors. He was a 5-time All-Star (1945, 1949–1952).

Roe’s peak season was 1951, when he went an exceptional 22-3. He was named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year for the National League. He pitched well in the World Series against the Yankees, notably throwing a complete-game shutout in Game 2 of the 1949 Series, the only win for the Dodgers in that series.

Originally a hard-throwing pitcher, a fractured skull suffered in an offseason coaching accident in 1946 forced Roe to reinvent himself. He transitioned into a crafty control pitcher who relied on keeping hitters off balance with a variety of slow pitches. He later publicly admitted to using the spitball (an outlawed pitch), famously saying his success was due to “clean livin’ and the spitball.” His sly, good-natured demeanor and ability to make batters look foolish made him a colorful and popular figure in Brooklyn.

Preacher Roe’s successful second act with the Dodgers cemented his reputation as one of the best left-handers of his era.
