Gil Hodges was an influential figure in Major League Baseball, known for his accomplishments as both a player and a manager. He spent most of his 18-year playing career as a first baseman for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, and later managed the New York Mets to their first World Series title.

Hodges was a key member of the Brooklyn Dodgers’ legendary “Boys of Summer” teams of the 1950s, which included other Hall of Famers like Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, and Pee Wee Reese. He was a strong right-handed hitter, consistently among the league leaders in home runs and RBIs. He also became the first National League player to hit four home runs in a single game after 1900.

Hodges was widely regarded as one of the best defensive first basemen of his era. He won the first three Gold Glove Awards ever awarded at his position (1957-1959). He led the NL in double plays four times and in putouts, assists, and fielding percentage three times each. Hodges helped the Dodgers win two World Series titles as a player, in 1955 (Brooklyn’s only title) and 1959. He was an 8-time All-Star. He finished his playing career with the expansion New York Mets in 1962-1963.

After retiring as a player, Hodges immediately transitioned to managing, taking over the Washington Senators in 1963. In 1968, Hodges was hired to manage the New York Mets. In 1969, in one of the most improbable runs in sports history, he led the Mets to their first winning season and an improbable World Series championship, defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles.

Gil Hodges was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022, 50 years after his passing. He was elected by the Golden Days Era Committee, recognizing his significant contributions as both a player and a manager. Both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets have retired his number 14 in his honor.

Gil Hodges was known for his quiet leadership and integrity, both as a player and a manager.
