As a rookie with the Phillies in 1941, he led the National League in stolen bases with 18, despite playing in only 85 games that season. Murtaugh’s playing career was interrupted by service in the United States Army during World War II, where he served in combat in Germany.
After his playing career ended in 1951, Murtaugh transitioned to coaching and managing in the Pirates’ minor league system before taking over the major league club. He had a 29-year association with the Pirates organization. Murtaugh managed the Pirates across four different stints between 1957 and 1976. Murtaugh led the Pirates to two World Series championships.
Murtaugh retired multiple times from the managerial position, often citing health concerns, but was persuaded to return to the dugout repeatedly. He died in 1976.
His number 40 was retired by the Pirates in 1977.
