Gerald Francis “Jerry” Coleman (often mistakenly called “Gerry”). His career is notable for his exceptional military service, his role as a slick-fielding player on the great New York Yankees dynasties, and his long, beloved career as a broadcaster. He spent his entire nine-year playing career in the majors with the Yankees as a second baseman. He was a 4-time World Series champion with the Yankees (1949, 1950, 1951, 1956).
Awards include being named the Associated Press Rookie of the Year 1949. Named an All-Star and the World Series MVP (unofficial Babe Ruth Award at the time) for his clutch hitting and defense in the Yankees’ sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1950.
Coleman’s baseball career was repeatedly interrupted by his service as a United States Marine Corps aviator. He is the only MLB player to fly combat missions in two different wars. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, earning him the enduring nickname “The Colonel.”
After retiring from playing, Coleman spent the rest of his life in baseball, becoming one of the sport’s most famous and longest-tenured broadcasters.
