Terry Puhl was an outfielder who had a 15-year career in Major League Baseball, with the majority of his time spent with the Houston Astros (1977-1990). He also played for the Kansas City Royals in 1991.
Puhl was a key member of the Houston Astros during their successful run in the 1980s. In 1980, he helped the team win their first-ever National League West division title.
Known for his all-around game, Puhl was a skilled hitter and a standout defender. His career fielding percentage of .993 is the best among outfielders in Astros history and ranks among the all-time leaders. He was selected as an All-Star in 1978 and in 1984, he was the first recipient of the Tip O’Neill Award as the Canadian Baseball Player of the Year. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Houston Astros Hall of Fame in 2022.
After his playing career, Puhl remained involved in baseball, serving as the head coach for the University of Houston-Victoria’s baseball team and managing the Canada national baseball team.
