Tom Hume was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball for 11 seasons, primarily with the Cincinnati Reds.
Initially a starter, Hume found his greatest success as a reliever. In 1980, he had a standout season, posting a 2.56 ERA and recording 25 saves, which earned him the National League “Fireman of the Year” award. He was also named to the All-Star team in 1982 and recorded the save for the NL in their 4-1 victory.
He played for the Philadelphia Phillies for a brief period before returning to the Reds to finish his career in 1987. After retiring as a player, Hume became the Reds’ pitching coach, a role he held for over a decade.
Tom Hume’s official rookie card is part of this 1978 Topps set. This card, number 701, is a “rookie pitchers” card and features Hume along with three other players: Steve McCatty , Bruce Taylor and Larry Landreth.
