Raymond “Ray” Lewis Lankford is a former American professional baseball center fielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres. Known for his blend of power, speed, and defense, Lankford was a key player for the Cardinals for over a decade.

He spent the majority of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals (1990-2001, 2004) and also had a stint with the San Diego Padres (2001-2002).

Lankford was selected as a National League All-Star in 1997. He finished his career among the Cardinals’ top 10 in several statistical categories, including home runs, stolen bases, and runs batted in. Over his 14-year career, Lankford had a batting average of .272, with 238 home runs and 874 runs batted in.

After a brief retirement, he returned to the Cardinals for a final season in 2004, where he was part of the team that won the National League pennant. He finished his career in style, hitting a pinch-hit home run in his final at-bat in his home ballpark. In 2018, he was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.

Did You Know?  Lankford made a brief debut in late 1990 before taking over as the Cardinals’ everyday center fielder and leadoff hitter in 1991. Stepping into a lineup that was trying to redefine itself, Lankford provided an immediate spark of dynamic athleticism.

He put together a fantastic rookie campaign, batting .251 with 9 home runs, 69 RBIs, and a spectacular, league-leading 15 triples. He also showcased his raw speed by swiping 44 bases and scoring 83 runs, finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. His rare blend of power and wheels signaled that a new type of modern catalyst had arrived in St. Louis.
