William Hayward “Mookie” Wilson was an exciting and integral Major League Baseball outfielder whose career spanned 12 seasons (1980-1991) with the New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays.

Drafted by the Mets in 1977, Wilson quickly climbed the minor league ranks, earning International League Rookie of the Year honors in 1979. He made his MLB debut in September 1980. Wilson led the Mets in stolen bases every year from 1982 to 1987. He holds several Mets franchise records.

Mookie Wilson is perhaps best remembered for his role in one of the most iconic and pivotal plays in World Series history. In the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, with the Mets down to their last out and trailing the Boston Red Sox, Wilson hit a ground ball that famously rolled through the legs of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner, allowing the tying and winning runs to score. This play kept the Mets’ championship hopes alive and they went on to win Game 7, securing the 1986 World Series championship.

In August 1989, Wilson was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. He continued to be a productive outfielder and leadoff man for the Blue Jays for the remainder of that season and for the next two years. He played a role on the Blue Jays teams that won AL East division titles in 1989 and 1991.

After his playing career, Wilson remained involved in baseball, primarily with the New York Mets organization. He served as the Mets’ first-base coach from 1996 to 2002 and again in 2011. He also managed in the Mets’ minor league system.
