Butler’s career spanned 17 seasons (1981–1997) across five different franchises. He was a table-setter for some of the era’s most iconic lineups, particularly with the San Francisco Giants during their 1989 World Series run and later with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Butler was a master of the “small ball” era. He led the league in triples twice (1983, 1985) and runs scored twice (1990, 1991). He finished his career with 558 stolen bases, consistently ranking among the league leaders during his tenure with Cleveland and San Francisco. He is widely regarded as one of the best bunters in baseball history, frequently using the drag bunt to reach first base and ignite rallies.
Butler’s key cards are found in the 1982 sets. Interestingly, this Topps “Future Stars” card is a “multi-player” rookie, which he shares with teammates Steve Bedrosian and Larry Owen.
