John Smoltz had a remarkable career with 21-seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is most known for his time with the Atlanta Braves, where he formed a dominant pitching trio with Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. Smoltz achieved the rare feat of being both a dominant starting pitcher and an elite closer. He earned a Cy Young Award in 1996, and later setting an NL record with 55 saves in 2002. John Smoltz was a key part of the Braves’ 1995 World Series championship. Smoltz was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.

His rookie card, like many from his era, is not a single card but rather several from the 1989 sets. John Smoltz rookie cards are widely recognized and popular among collectors of this era. While not as valuable as some iconic rookies from earlier decades, it remains a common and accessible piece for collectors looking to commemorate his Hall of Fame career.

Did You Know?  While his rotation mates Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine relied on surgical finesse, Smoltz was the true power arm of the Braves staff, hitting his absolute peak during a spectacular, record-breaking 1996 regular season.

During that magical 1996 campaign, Smoltz was completely unhittable, putting together a spectacular 24-8 record with a 2.94 ERA and a league-leading 276 strikeouts over 253.2 grueling innings. He went on a historic tear during the middle of the summer, winning 14 consecutive decisions to capture national headlines. His utter dominance across the senior circuit earned him the 1996 National League Cy Young Award, proving that his high-octane mix of pure velocity and a biting slider could completely dismantle the most explosive offenses of the era.
