Gregg Olson (with two ‘g’s) was one of the most dominant closers of the late 80s and early 90s, famous for a “knee-buckling” curveball that hitters often called the best in the game.

Olson made history by becoming the first ever relief pitcher to win the American League Rookie of the Year award. He saved 27 games that year with a microscopic 1.69 ERA.

He spent the peak of his career with the Baltimore Orioles, where he became the franchise’s all-time saves leader (160) before later being surpassed. He was an All-Star in 1990 and set a club record at the time with 37 saves in a single season.

After a major elbow injury in 1993, he bounced around several teams. Most thought he was done, but he had a brilliant “second act” with the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998, saving 30 games and proving he could still close at the highest level.

Gregg is still active in the baseball world, serving as a scout for the San Diego Padres. He was also recently inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame for his legendary career at Auburn.
