To understand Lemke, you have to look at the “two versions” of his career. During the regular season, he was a steady, light-hitting second baseman for the 1990s Atlanta Braves dynasty. But in the World Series, he turned into a giant.
1991 World Series: This was his true arrival. He led the Braves with a .417 batting average against the Twins and hit three triples. He was so dominant that many argue he would have been the World Series MVP had the Braves won Game 7.
Clutch Factor: Across 62 career postseason games, he consistently delivered big hits that defied his career .246 regular-season average.
After his MLB career ended following a concussion in 1998, Lemke did something wild: he tried to return to the majors as a knuckleball pitcher. He spent time in the independent Northern League with the New Jersey Jackals. While the “dream” didn’t lead back to the Big Leagues (he once threw nine wild pitches in successive at-bats), it cemented his legacy as a player who truly loved the grind of the game.
Lemke has served as a studio host and color analyst for the Braves Radio Network. He is a frequent guest at Braves alumni events, still celebrated as the gritty engine of the 1995 World Championship team.
