Steven “Steve” Decker is a former professional baseball player and a well-known baseball coach. His career spans over two decades and includes time as a player in Major League Baseball and a coach in both the minor and major leagues.
Drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 21st round of the 1988 MLB draft, Decker was a right-handed catcher. He made his MLB debut with the Giants on September 18, 1990. Over his seven-year MLB career, he played for four teams: San Francisco Giants (1990-1992, 1996), Florida Marlins (1993, 1995), Colorado Rockies (1996) and Anaheim Angels (1999).
In 263 career games, he had a batting average of .221, with 13 home runs and 72 RBIs. While his MLB numbers were modest, he was a productive player in the minor leagues, where he had a .302 batting average with 101 home runs and 575 RBIs over 913 games.
Following his playing career, Decker transitioned to coaching, primarily within the San Francisco Giants organization. He served as a hitting coach for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (2001-2002) and the Fresno Grizzlies (2003-2004). Decker managed several minor league teams, including the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (2005-2007), where he won the Northwest League Manager of the Year award three times and led the team to two championships. He also managed the San Jose Giants (2008), the Connecticut Defenders (2009), and the Fresno Grizzlies (2010-2011).
He became an assistant hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants in 2015. After two seasons, he was named a special assistant in baseball operations for the Giants.
