Trevor Hoffman, born on October 13, 1967, is a former professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball for 18 years from 1993 to 2010. He is widely considered one of the greatest closers in the history of the sport.

He made his MLB debut with the Florida Marlins in 1993 before being traded to the San Diego Padres mid-season. He would go on to spend the majority of his career with the Padres (1993–2008) and became the face of the franchise after Tony Gwynn retired. Hoffman finished his career with a two-year stint with the Milwaukee Brewers (2009–2010).

Hoffman was the first player in MLB history to reach both the 500- and 600-save milestones, and he held the all-time saves record from 2006 until 2011. He was a seven-time All-Star, a two-time NL Rolaids Relief Man Award winner, and a two-time NL saves leader.

An injury to his shoulder after the 1994 season forced Hoffman to change his approach. His fastball velocity decreased, so he developed a devastating changeup from teammate Donnie Elliott, which became his signature pitch and earned him the nickname “The Master of the Mystifying Changeup.” Hoffman became famous for his entrance at home games, which featured the AC/DC song “Hells Bells.

After retiring, Hoffman became a special assistant in the Padres’ front office. In 2014, Major League Baseball created the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award, which is given annually to the top relief pitcher in the National League. His jersey number, 51, was retired by the San Diego Padres in 2011.

Hoffman was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.
