Javier “Javy” López Torres is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) catcher who played for the Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox during his 15-year career. He is best known for his time with the Atlanta Braves, where he was a key part of their success in the 1990s and early 2000s.
He made his MLB debut with the Braves in 1992 and established himself as the team’s regular catcher in 1996. He was a three-time All-Star, and in 1995, he won a World Series championship with the Braves. His impressive performance in the 1996 National League Championship Series (NLCS) earned him the MVP award for the series.
Lopez’s most notable season was in 2003 with the Braves, where he hit 43 home runs, setting a single-season record for home runs by a catcher. That year, he also had a .328 batting average and 109 RBIs, earning him a Silver Slugger Award and a fifth-place finish in the National League MVP voting. He was inducted into the Atlanta Braves Hall of Fame in 2014. He retired in 2006.
