Raul Ibañez built a 19-year Major League career on a foundation of professional plate discipline and late-career power. Originally a 36th-round draft pick who transitioned from catcher to the outfield, he eventually became one of the most respected veteran hitters in the game.
Ibañez spent his early years primarily with the Seattle Mariners, but his career truly accelerated during a three-year stint with the Kansas City Royals (2001–2003). In 2002, he posted his first 100-RBI season, establishing himself as a premier middle-of-the-order threat. He returned to Seattle in 2004 and enjoyed the most consistent stretch of his career. From 2006 to 2008, he averaged over 25 home runs and 110 RBIs per season, culminating in a 2006 campaign where he tallied a career-high 123 RBIs and scored over 100 runs.
Ibañez signed with the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in 2009 and immediately delivered a career year. He launched 34 home runs and earned his first All-Star selection at age 37. During that postseason, he helped the Phillies return to the World Series, contributing vital hits throughout the National League playoffs.
Ibañez became a postseason legend for the New York Yankees in 2012. In Game 3 of the ALDS against the Orioles, he entered as a pinch-hitter and launched a game-tying home run in the ninth inning and a walk-off home run in the 12th.
In 2013, back with the Mariners, he defied age by hitting 29 home runs at age 41, tying a record set by Ted Williams for the most home runs in a single season by a player in his 40s.
Known as one of the hardest-working players in the clubhouse, Ibañez transitioned into a front-office role after his playing days.
