He is best known for his time with the Toronto Blue Jays during their back-to-back World Series championships in 1992 and 1993. Known for his powerful fastball and a wicked slider, Guzmán was a dominant force on the mound in the early part of his career, earning the nickname “Human Rain Delay”.
Guzmán’s career spanned ten seasons in Major League Baseball from 1991 to 2000. He was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1985 before being traded to the Blue Jays in 1987.
Guzmán was a key member of the Blue Jays’ starting rotation that won consecutive World Series titles. He led the American League in earned run average with a 2.93 ERA in 1996. His outstanding performance in the 1992 season earned him an All-Star selection.
Despite his success, Guzmán’s career was marked by struggles with control, as he led the American League in wild pitches in 1993 and 1994.
