Frank Castillo was an American professional baseball player who pitched in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 13 seasons. He was known as a solid and reliable starting pitcher for much of his career.
Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1987, Castillo spent the majority of his career with the team, from 1991 to 1997. During his time with the Cubs, he was a key member of their starting rotation. He had his most productive season in 1995, finishing with an 11-10 record and a career-best 3.21 ERA.
After leaving the Cubs, Castillo played for several other teams, including the Colorado Rockies, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Florida Marlins. Though he only appeared in two games for the team in 2004, he was a member of the Boston Red Sox team that won the World Series, earning a championship ring. Over his career, Castillo compiled a record of 82 wins and 104 losses with a 4.56 ERA and 1,101 strikeouts.
After retiring from baseball, Castillo became a pitching coach for the Rookie League Mesa Cubs. On July 28, 2013, he tragically drowned in Bartlett Lake in Arizona at the age of 44 while on a boating trip with his family.
