Donald “Don” Newcombe, often nicknamed “Newk,” was a pioneering American professional baseball pitcher. He played ten non-consecutive seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers.
In his rookie season in 1949, Newcombe posted a 17-8 record, helped the Dodgers win the pennant, and was named the National League Rookie of the Year. Newcombe’s most celebrated season was in 1956. He compiled a stellar 27-7 record with a 3.06 ERA, leading the league in wins and winning percentage. For his outstanding performance, he was awarded both the National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award and the inaugural Cy Young Award. He was also a member of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers team that won the World Series.
Newcombe was a four-time All-Star (1949-1951, 1955). He had three 20-win seasons (1951, 1955, 1956) and twice led the National League in winning percentage (1955, 1956). He also led the NL in strikeouts in 1951 and shutouts in 1949.
After his MLB career, Newcombe played briefly for the Chunichi Dragons in Japan in 1962, primarily as a first baseman and outfielder due to his hitting. He later worked in the front office of the Dodgers and dedicated his life to helping others, becoming a prominent advocate in substance abuse recovery.
