Delmar Wesley “Del” Crandall was the premier National League catcher of the 1950s and the defensive anchor of the legendary Milwaukee Braves powerhouse teams.
A 11-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, Crandall was widely considered the junior circuit’s direct answer to Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella. Pairing excellent defensive instincts and a powerful throwing arm with reliable pop at the plate, he flawlessly handled a legendary Braves pitching staff that included Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette, guiding the franchise to two consecutive pennants and a historic World Series title.
Crandall broke into the big leagues as a teenager with the Boston Braves in 1949, finishing runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year award. After missing the 1951 and 1952 seasons due to military service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he rejoined the franchise just as it relocated to Wisconsin.
The World Series Pinnacle: He perfectly orchestrated the pitching staff during the 1957 World Series, calling Lew Burdette’s three spectacular complete-game victories to dethrone the mighty New York Yankees. Crandall also homered in Game 7 of that series to cement the title.
The Defensive Vanguard: When Major League Baseball introduced the Gold Glove Award in 1957 to honor elite defenders, Crandall quickly locked down the National League category. He captured four of the first six NL Gold Gloves ever awarded to a catcher (1958–1960, 1962).
Teams Played For: Boston Braves (1949–1950), Milwaukee Braves (1953–1963), San Francisco Giants (1964), Pittsburgh Pirates (1965), Cleveland Indians (1966).
Career Totals: 1,573 games, 1,289 hits, 179 home runs, 657 RBIs.
Accolades: 1957 World Series Champion, 11-time NL All-Star, 4-time Gold Glove Winner.

Did You Know? While he was celebrated for his mastery behind the plate, Crandall provided potent right-handed power to a batting order already stacked with Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews. He belted 20 or more home runs in a season three separate times, finishing his career with 179 round-trippers—a highly impressive total for a catcher in that era.
Following his 16-year playing career, Crandall transitioned seamlessly into the dugout as a respected manager. He managed both the Milwaukee Brewers (1972–1975) and the Seattle Mariners (1983–1984), and later enjoyed a long, successful second career as a beloved sports broadcaster.
