Selva Lewis “Lew” Burdette Jr. was a fiercely competitive, nerves-of-steel right-hander who formed one of the most formidable pitching duos of the post-war era alongside Hall of Fame lefty Warren Spahn.
While Spahn was celebrated for his artistic longevity and smooth mechanics, Burdette was a master of psychological warfare on the mound. Infamous across the National League for fidgeting, wiping his brow, and adjusting his uniform on every single pitch, he kept hitters perpetually off-balance, constantly suspecting him of throwing a banned spitball (a charge he gleefully played into). Behind the theatrics stood an exceptionally durable workhorse with pinpoint control who saved his absolute greatest performances for baseball’s biggest stage.
Originally signed by the New York Yankees, Burdette was traded to the Boston Braves in 1951 for veteran Johnny Sain—a transaction that drastically altered the balance of power in the National League. Following the franchise’s move to Wisconsin, Burdette blossomed into an elite winner, but his definitive career crowning achievement occurred during the 1957 World Series.
The Giant Slayer: Facing his former team, the powerhouse New York Yankees, Burdette put together one of the most dominant individual pitching performances in postseason history.
Three Complete Games: He started and threw three complete-game victories (Games 2, 5, and 7), including back-to-back shutouts in the final games to single-handedly dismantle the Bronx Bombers and bring the world championship to Milwaukee.

Did You Know? Burdette proved his postseason heroics were no fluke by leading the National League with 20 wins in 1958, capturing another NL Pennant. In 1959, he captured the league ERA title with a stellar 2.71 ERA and led the league with 4 shutouts. On August 18, 1960, he reached another career milestone by pitching a spectacular 1–0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies, facing the minimum 27 batters.
