Henry Albert “Hank” Bauer was the fierce, gritty, and battle-hardened soul of the legendary New York Yankees dynasty of the late 1940s and 1950s.

A rugged, stone-faced outfielder, Bauer was famously described by teammates and opponents alike as a man who played baseball with the intense seriousness of a combat mission. Before patrolling Yankee Stadium’s outfield Bauer was a highly decorated elite combat Marine in World War II. He translated that exact same fearless, disciplined, and uncompromising work ethic onto the diamond, helping anchor a squad that reached nine World Series in a 10-year stretch.

Bauer’s road to the major leagues was entirely unique and defined his legendary toughness. Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps after Pearl Harbor, Bauer became a platoon sergeant in the elite 4th Raider Battalion.

The Combat Record: He fought in some of the most brutal Pacific campaigns of WWII, including Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Emirau, Guam, and Okinawa.

The Medals: Bauer was wounded multiple times, surviving malaria and a severe shrapnel wound to his thigh on Okinawa. He earned two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts for his extraordinary bravery under fire before returning home to pursue professional baseball.

Teams Played For: New York Yankees (1948–1959), Kansas City Athletics (1960–1961).

Career Totals: 1,544 games, 1,424 hits, 164 home runs, 703 RBIs, and a .277 lifetime batting average.

The Rings: Bauer won a staggering seven World Series Championships as a player (1949–1953, 1956, 1958) plus an eighth title as a manager in 1966.

This Bowman card is a gorgeous, early painted profile of Bauer in his classic home pinstripes against a bright blue sky backdrop. Finding this card with sharp corners and clean centering is a premium chase.

Did You Know?  During the height of the Yankees’ dominance, Bauer established an MLB postseason milestone that stands to this day. From Game 1 of the 1956 World Series through Game 3 of the 1958 World Series, he hit safely in 17 consecutive World Series games—a legendary fallback record for modern postseason performers to chase.

During the 1958 Fall Classic comeback victory against the Milwaukee Braves, Bauer completely carried the Yankees’ offense, clouting four home runs and driving in eight runs while batting .323.
