Albert “Al” Leonard Rosen, nicknamed “Flip” and “the Hebrew Hammer,” was a prominent figure in Major League Baseball, both as a player and an executive. He played his entire 10-year career (1947-1956) as a third baseman for the Cleveland Indians in the American League.

Rosen’s most outstanding season was in 1953 when he was unanimously voted the American League MVP. Rosen twice led the American League in home runs (1950 and 1953) and twice in RBIs (1952 and 1953). He was a four-time All-Star, selected every year from 1952 to 1955.  In 1950, he became the first rookie to lead the American League in home runs with 37, a record that stood until Mark McGwire surpassed it in 1987.

After retiring from baseball in 1956 due to lingering injuries, Rosen pursued a successful career as a stockbroker for two decades. He then returned to baseball in top front office executive roles. He served as president and CEO of the New York Yankees (1978-1979). He was the team president and general manager for the Houston Astros (1980-1985). Rosen served as president and general manager for the San Francisco Giants from 1985 to 1992, where he was named Major League Executive of the Year in 1987.

Al Rosen was inducted into the Cleveland Guardians Hall of Fame (2006), the Florida Sports Hall of Fame (1967), and the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame (1971), among others.
