A.J. Pierzynski is a former American professional baseball player who had a long and successful career as a catcher in Major League Baseball (MLB).
Pierzynski’s career spanned 19 seasons, from 1998 to 2016. He played for seven teams, most notably the Minnesota Twins (1998–2003) and the Chicago White Sox (2005–2012). He also played for the San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Atlanta Braves.
He was a core member of the Chicago White Sox team that won the World Series, breaking an 88-year drought for the franchise. He is a 2-time All-Star (2002, 2006) and won a Silver Slugger Award (2012).
Pierzynski was known for being an intense and polarizing figure on the field. He had a reputation as a fierce competitor and was often described as having a “colorful” and “brash” personality that could rub opponents (and sometimes even teammates) the wrong way. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillén famously said, “If you play against him, you hate him. If you play with him, you hate him a little less.” This competitive edge and knowledge of the game, however, made him a fan favorite in Chicago.
Following his retirement as a player, A.J. Pierzynski transitioned into broadcasting working as a television sports presenter and analyst for FOX Sports.
