Ozzie Guillén is a former professional baseball player and manager. He is recognized for his long career as a shortstop and for leading the Chicago White Sox to a World Series championship as a manager.
Guillén played for 16 seasons in MLB, most notably for the Chicago White Sox from 1985 to 1997. He was known for his defensive skills and aggressive playing style.
In 1985 Guillen won the American League Rookie of the Year Award. He won the award after hitting 49 home runs in his rookie season, the third shortstop in baseball history to win a fielding title. He was selected to the All-Star team in 1988, 1990, and 1991. He won a Golden Glove award in 1990 for his outstanding defense at shortstop.
A severe knee injury in 1992 affected his speed and defensive range for the remainder of his playing career.
After his playing career, Guillén transitioned to coaching and then managing. He coached for the Montreal Expos (2001-2002) and the Florida Marlins (2003), where he won a World Series as a coach. He then became the manager of the Chicago White Sox in 2004. In 2005, he led the White Sox to their first World Series title since 1917, sweeping the Houston Astros.
