In his first year with Atlanta, Pendleton shocked the league by winning the Batting Title (.319) and leading the Braves to the World Series. He narrowly beat out Barry Bonds for the MVP award.
3-Time Gold Glove Winner (1987, 1989, 1992): Before his offensive breakout, he was regarded as one of the best defensive third basemen in the game, specifically during his tenure with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Postseason Regular: Pendleton appeared in five World Series (1985 and 1987 with St. Louis; 1991, 1992, and 1996 with Atlanta). While he never won a ring as a player, he was a fixture in October baseball.
1992 MVP Runner-Up: He nearly won back-to-back MVPs, leading the league in Hits (199) and Total Bases (313) in 1992, finishing second to Bonds.
When the Braves signed Pendleton as a free agent in 1991, they had finished in last place the previous year. His veteran leadership and defensive stability at third base stabilized a young pitching staff that included John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and Steve Avery.
After retiring in 1998, Pendleton spent nearly two decades as a coach for the Atlanta Braves (2002–2017), serving as hitting coach and bench coach. He remains one of the most respected figures in the franchise’s history.
