James Edward “Pete” Runnels (1928–1991) was one of the premier contact hitters of the post-war era. A versatile infielder who could play shortstop, second base, and first base with equal steady defensive proficiency, he was a fixture of the American League for 14 seasons.

Though he didn’t possess much home run power, Runnels was a master of bat control. He worked closely under the tutelage of none other than Ted Williams, which helped him secure two American League Batting Championships with the Boston Red Sox (1960 and 1962). He very nearly won a third in 1958, losing the crown to Williams himself on the final day of the season.

Two-Time Batting Champion: He captured the AL crown in 1960 with a .320 average and again in 1962 with a career-high .326.

The Single-Day Hit Record: On August 30, 1960, Runnels tied a major league record by collecting 9 hits in a doubleheader (6-for-7 in the first game, 3-for-4 in the second).

All-Star Versatility: Runnels was selected to five All-Star Games during his tenure in Boston, demonstrating remarkable defensive adaptability by leading the league in fielding percentage at second base in 1960 and then at first base in 1961.
