Joe Black (1924–2002) was a trailblazing force in baseball history. After starring in the Negro Leagues with the Baltimore Elite Giants, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and became an immediate sensation.
As a 28-year-old rookie in 1952, Black anchored a legendary Dodgers pitching staff, primarily working out of the bullpen to dominate National League hitters with a blistering fastball and sharp slider. His historic season culminated in winning the 1952 NL Rookie of the Year Award and becoming the first Black pitcher to win a World Series game (Game 1 against the New York Yankees).
1952 Rookie Campaign: Black went 15–4 with 15 saves and a sparkling 2.15 ERA over 56 appearances, helping power the Dodgers to the NL Pennant.
World Series History: Handed the start in Game 1 of the 1952 World Series by manager Charlie Dressen, Black threw a complete-game 6-hitter to defeat the Yankees 4–2.
Post-Career Legacy: An incredibly educated man who earned his degree from Morgan State University, Black went on to become a college professor, a successful executive for Greyhound, and a tireless advocate for former Negro League players.
