Hoyt Wilhelm (1922-2002) was an American professional baseball pitcher, widely regarded as the most influential relief pitcher in the history of the game. His career, which spanned an incredible 21 seasons from 1952 to 1972, redefined the role of the bullpen ace and was built almost entirely on his mastery of the knuckleball. He was the first relief pitcher ever elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Wilhelm’s defining characteristic was his signature pitch, the knuckleball. This pitch is thrown with minimal spin, causing it to flutter and dart unpredictably, making it exceptionally difficult for batters to hit and equally challenging for catchers to handle. Wilhelm’s career was a testament to the growing importance of the relief pitcher. He was a dominant force out of the bullpen, pioneering the role of the late-inning specialist.

On September 20, 1958, while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles, Wilhelm threw a no-hitter against the New York Yankees. Remarkably, this was only his 52nd career start and the first no-hitter in modern Orioles history. He won a World Series with the New York Giants in 1954. He was an 8-time All-Star and led his league in ERA twice (1952 and 1959).

At the time of his retirement, he held numerous career records, including the most career games pitched (1,070), the most relief wins (124), and the most career saves (228), a record that stood for many years.

Wilhelm was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 on his eighth ballot. His induction marked a pivotal moment, as he became the first pitcher to be inducted into the Hall of Fame based primarily on his career as a reliever.
