Joe Nuxhall, often known as “The Ol’ Lefthander,” had a remarkable and unique career in baseball that spanned from the playing field to the broadcast booth.

Due to player shortages during World War II, the Reds called on the young left-hander to pitch in the ninth inning of a lopsided loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at 15 years old.

After that single appearance, Nuxhall spent the next eight years in the minor leagues, honing his skills. He returned to the Reds in 1952 and went on to have a successful major league career that lasted until 1966. During his 16-season career, Nuxhall compiled a record of 135–117 with a 3.90 ERA. He was a two-time All-Star, earning selections in 1955 and 1956. He pitched for the Reds for most of his career, with brief stints with the Kansas City Athletics and Los Angeles Angels.

Immediately after his playing career ended in 1966, Nuxhall transitioned to a new role as a radio broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds. Despite his lack of experience, his knowledge of the game and affable personality quickly made him a fan favorite. Nuxhall’s broadcasts became known for his iconic sign-off phrase: “This is the old left-hander, rounding third and heading for home.” This phrase is displayed on the outside of Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

Nuxhall remained a fixture in the broadcast booth until his retirement in 2004, though he continued to make guest appearances until his death in 2007. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1968.
